What should I pay attention to while reading?

Ok so for summer reading for AP english next year, we have to read 4 books. The 2nd one is Jane Smiley's, A Thousand Acres. I am about to read it but my teacher didn't give us any instructions other then to just read them. Should I focus on themes I see.. Or what? Thanks!
